Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy

The word prolo comes from the word proliferate, which means “to grow”. Prolotherapy, on the other hand, is “the rehabilitation of an inadequate structure, such as a ligament or tendon, through the induced proliferation of cells.”

The proliferated dextrose in the prolotherapy solution stimulates localized inflammation, which is essential for the first stage of healing. Cells respond immediately to inflammation by producing growth factors, causing fibroblastic proliferation. This helps to produce collagen and repair ligaments and tendons. Following prolotherapy treatment, ligaments and tendons increase in mass, strength and thickness due to collagen tissue production.

Weak or loose ligaments and tendons can be “triggers” for migraines and tension-type headaches. Prolotherapy provides significant improvement in headache severity and frequency by strengthening the cervical ligaments and tendons and treating very common trigger and pain areas of the posterior neck.
